The Inclusion way…

A more flexible approach to learning

English

For many of of our students we know that English can be a challenge with previous experience in mainstream settings and periods of being away from education making it difficult to engage with the curriculum. Our aim is to change this and support our students to re-engage with learning in the right way for them.

English

All students will undertake a baseline assessment each September to assess their levels and gaps in their understanding. All students will have the opportunity to study for a Functional Skills Qualification in English at Entry 3-level 2.

English Functional Skills Qualifications provide students with the fundamental skills to use the English language in personal and professional situations. To gain the English Functional Skills qualification, learners must pass the following assessments:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking and listening

In addition to their Functional Skills lessons, students will also have a range of English in Everyday life modules including tasks such as written communication – emails and letters, completing application forms, skills needed in the workplace, newspaper and internet articles etc

Reading

Whilst we are aware that most of our students are able to read adequately, we are keen to improve understanding and fluency. Assessments will take place so that individual help can be planned for those students who have more difficulty and diagnosis of dyslexia.
