The Inclusion way…

A more flexible approach to learning

Maths

As with English, Maths in particular can be an area our students may have challenges engaging with, given previous experiences and periods away from mainstream education settings. Our team work hard to support students to grow in confidence and security in their knowledge and skills, working with them to support their learning and understanding.

The college curriculum is highly personalised.
We support pupils to move forward from their starting point.

All students will undertake a baseline assessment each September to assess their levels and gaps in their understanding. All students will have the opportunity to study for a Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Entry 3-level 2.

Maths Functional Skills qualifications will help to strengthen students’ knowledge of mathematical concepts without using a calculator. Learners will be assessed on a range of topics, including:

  • Using numbers and the number system
  • Using common measures, shapes and space
  • Handling information and data
  • Solving mathematical problems and decision making

In addition to their Functional Skills lessons, students will also have a range of Maths in Everyday life modules including tasks such as

Budgeting, shopping, planning events , opening a bank account, credit, taxes, bills , use of maths for daily living such as DIY etc

Once baseline assessments have been completed, students needing additional help with maths will be identified and appropriate support given in lessons and additional sessions.
